March 11: Annual Benefit starring Sybil Gage
Even before she starts her performances, Sybil stands out in
the crowd at all of her many jazz venues, including world-famous Heidi's Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach, where she has held down the Tuesday night spot for two years. She exudes New Orleans, donned always in colorful dresses adorned by feathery boas, funky hats, flashy jewelry and colorful high, heeled shoes. Her ever-present smile is the final touch.
And then there is her voice, also adding to her New Orleans persona. She has been compared to Eartha Kitt, Dinah Washington and Pearl Bailey, but shines as an original. The Internet CD seller CD Baby recommends her CD, Red, for people who like Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Lena Horne. Copies of her CDs will be available at the March 11 concert. You can also hear some of her songs on her website at www.sybilsings.com. Singing the music of Blu Lu and Danny Barker, Sippie Wallace, Oscar Brown Jr. , Bessie Smith , Satchmo, and her own original music, Sybil has a devoted following that label's themselves "Sybilized" and have the tee shirts to prove it.
Her latest CD, NOLA Calling, reached #1 on the UVUMI internet charts last year and stayed there for 2 months. Nola Calling was also nominated for Best Self Produced CD by the Blues Challenge of Memphis 2011.
Sybil grew up in uptown New Orleans, where her grandparents’ property shared a wall with the home of the Neville Brothers. “We would see them every day.” She watched the jazz scene at Rosy's on Tchopitoulas , Jimmy's on Willow and Tipitina's on Napoleon Ave. Ellis Marsallis, the jazz educator and father of the 4 famed Marsallis brothers, led the band at Sybil’s sister’s wedding.
After beginning stints as a DJ in New Orleans she headed to Chicago and then to New York where she earned her degree in Fine Arts from NYU and became the Number 2 Morning Drive DJ under the name Sybil Williams on several NYC radio stations.
Sybil came to Florida in 2007 to be with her ailing father, who died and was buried in New Orleans just before Katrina. After the funeral she and her husband, Bill, returned to Cocoa and, upon arrival she quickly developed a large and devoted following with her own Blues & Jazz style. Throughout her career, Bill has been her manager and high-tech champion.
Her CD 'Red' took her fans by storm and left them clamoring for more as she mixed her vocal Jazz & Blues flavors with her original material as well as more familiar blues numbers like Stormy Weather and At Last.
